The Secrets of Paris's Biggest Flea Market!

 

Today we are taking you on a journey to one of our favorite places, Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen, France's biggest antique market. Located in the northern suburbs of Paris (accessible by Metro), the market’s name literally translates as "flea market," but it is hardly worthy of that name when you consider the riches awaiting discovery! From beautiful old doors to Louis Vuitton Trunks to antique dressers in pristine condition, shopping the market can feel a lot like being on an exciting treasure hunt. Throughout this post, we share photos of the treasures we found on Manoir's recent trip! So...What Is This Place?
Throughout history, the market at Saint-Ouen has played an important role in interior design world – it was originally opened by Napoleon III who wanted to give local craftsmen somewhere safe and legal to sell their work. Today it’s still just as popular with locals and tourists alike flocking there in search of beautiful vintage furniture and decorative items such as chandeliers or mirrors from all over Europe.

 

What Exactly Will I  Find There?
Quite simply put – everything! There are nearly 2,500 stalls that offer antiques, vintage pieces and other curiosities from all over the world. The majority of stalls are dedicated to antiques such as furniture, clocks and jewelry; however, there are also plenty of stalls selling secondhand books and records along with vintage clothing from all eras. There are also some more unusual items on offer such as old cameras or toys. Whether you are shopping for antique furniture or eclectic art pieces, there's something here for every taste and budget. Plus, it's a great way to get some amazing items at a fraction of what they would cost elsewhere - while supporting local businesses too!

The market itself is made up of nine different sections spread out along three main streets – Rue des Rosiers, Rue Jules Vallès and Avenue Michelet – each with its own unique offerings. Let's highlight a few of the markets and what makes them unique:

The Paul Bert Serpette Market has some of the best selections of vintage furniture and decorative items; it also offers upholstery services if you need help restoring that old armchair.

The Marché Dauphine is perfect for those seeking rare antiques from all over Europe as well as Asia – look out for its famous Art Deco lamps and mirrors!

Les Puces de Clignancourt specializes in French antiques such as chandeliers and clocks.

Finally, the Antic-Alésia where you can find more affordable bargains on everything from knick-knacks to collectibles.

Manoir's Pro Tips 
So how can you make the most out of your shopping experience at Saint Ouen?  Here are our pro tips!

  1. Plan ahead! If possible, try to visit on weekdays as Saturdays can be very crowded. Do your research before visiting so that you know exactly what items you want (and don't forget measurements).
  2. Haggle like a pro! It might feel intimidating at first but bargaining with sellers can get you great deals so don't be afraid to try it out.
  3. Wear comfortable shoes. Navigating this massive flea market will take time...but trust us when we say it'll be worth it in the end when you come away with beautiful finds for your home!
  4. Bring cash. Many vendors won’t accept credit cards or checks here.
  5. Be patient. Lastly, remember that patience pays off when it comes to finding those one-of-a kind treasures. Take your time exploring all 15 markets so you won’t miss anything!

In terms of practical considerations, don’t worry about shipping any large purchases back home yourself - many merchants offer delivery services so you can have them delivered directly without having to worry about searching for shippers!
